Heritage Meets Maximalism with Zoological Gardens

Heritage Meets Maximalism with Zoological Gardens

Unearthed from Spode’s archive to spark moments of maximalism, exotic wildlife and wild palms blend with vibrant hues for an irresistible tableware collection.

What inspired the Zoological Gardens design?

With over 250 years’ of patterns in the Spode archive, there’s certainly a lot of inspiration to be found. So, when it came to creating Zoological Gardens, we took our creativeness from not one, but three archive designs. When reimagining these designs, we had the opportunity to take a bold step in showcasing our heritage whilst adding a modern twist for a truly eye-catching design. And Zoological Gardens does just that, spectacularly.

After exploring the Spode museum and our studio in Stoke-on-Trent, searching for patterns to unearth, it was three designs in particular that caught Spode designer’s, Penny Swancott, eye. Penny couldn’t resist the idea of combining a mix of designs from the early 19th century that showcased a hint of intrigue and exotic touches; Zoological, Aesop’s Fable and Sporting Scenes.

The Zoological design depicted many exotic animals who at the time were not very well known and often regarded as curiosities. Animals such as lions and zebras. As well as wildlife, Spode also turned to literary and cultural patterns for their designs. Aesop’s Fable, a pattern from the 1830’s, showcases designs using literacy themes and subjects in performing arts. And, produced in the 1810’s, Sporting Scenes includes images of exotic, faraway places. Designs created at the time to stimulate the British public.

Vibrant shades for maximalist styling

Together, the blend of three fascinating designs featured on the Zoological Gardens collection showcases years of craftsmanship. But, always ready to challenge the boundaries we chose to reimagine the designs in a mix irresistible shades of pink, turquoise and monochrome. Bring out your inner maximalist, layering the vibrant colours and intriguing pattern for an eye-catching tablescape.

Life’s all about mixing and not matching, and Zoological Gardens urges you to do just that. Animal print dinner plates for your table? Why not. A cupboard full of green and pink pottery? Oh, if you insist.
