Transitional Styling with Morris & Co.

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, it’s time to bring the warmth and beauty of autumn indoors. We’ve taken inspiration from our nature-inspired Morris & Co. collection to add subtle autumnal touches to our living space with foliage, colour and scent. Read on to discover the 4 simple changes you can make to bring autumn into to your home, too.

1. Incorporate autumnal colours

Infusing your living room with rich, earthy tones can create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere, perfect for cosying up with a book or enjoying a cup of hot chocolate on a chilly afternoon. Autumn offers a breathtaking array of colours to draw inspiration from that can easily be incorporated into your living room for a seasonal touch.

Warm oranges and golden yellows, reminiscent of autumn foliage, bring a sense of energy and joy to any space, while deep greens and browns create a grounding and calming effect. Metallic accents of gold add a touch of luxury and warmth, beautifully reflecting the soft glow of autumn light, while rustic reds and burgundies offer a nod to the changing leaves and create depth and richness.

You don’t need a major overhaul to bring autumn colours into your living space. A few simple additions can make a significant difference. Start by draping chunky knit blankets in warm oranges or deep reds over sofas and armchairs – this not only adds visual warmth but also invites you to snuggle up on a cool evening. Similarly, swap out summery cushions for ones with autumnal tones and textures, think velvet or corduroy in shades of forest green, gold or rust. Finally, add texture with wood tones or wicker. Wicker trays on pouffes for your hot drinks and trinkets add to the warming tones without being too overwhelming.

2. Add a door wreath

Not just for Christmas, a beautiful wreath, bursting with the hues of autumn, is a wonderful way to welcome guests and set the tone for the cosy season ahead. Taking inspiration from the marigold and green shades showcased across our Morris & Co. collection, we opted for a wreath crafted with lush green foliage interspersed with eye-catching yellow and orange leaves. Delicate white berries and textured spruce add a touch of elegance and contrast to the deep colours, reminding us of the first dusting of frost on a crisp autumn morning. Whether homemade, shop-bought, real or faux, an autumn wreath is a small but impactful way to embrace the season and create an inviting atmosphere for all who enter your home.

3. Create an autumn fireplace garland

If, like us, you want to add more autumn colours into your space, why not follow our lead and transform your fireplace mantlepiece into an autumnal masterpiece with a lush garland that fully embraces the colours of the season?

How to style a fireplace garland:

1. Gather the foliage you want to use. We chose a mix of real and fake foliage in different shades of green, yellow, and gold to tie in with our overall theme. Fern leaves are great for filling lots of space, while eucalyptus adds texture and depth.

2. Start by adding the larger, flatter leaves onto the shelf as a base, mirroring the leaves you add either side and leaving a focal point in the centre to draw the eye.

3. Continue to build onto the garland, adding in smaller sprigs of foliage and weaving the different foliage in between each other to create height and depth.

4. Finish by adding two tapered candles either side for additional height and nestle miniature fabric pumpkins into the centre amidst the leaves, adding a playful touch to the elegant display

An autumn-inspired fireplace instantly becomes the heart of your living space, radiating a cosy and inviting ambiance that perfectly complements the season.

4. Scent your space

Scents have a powerful ability to evoke memories and create ambience, and so incorporating autumnal fragrances is a wonderful way to celebrate the season. Candles are a classic way to add fragrance to any room. When choosing autumnal scents, look for notes that capture the essence of the season. For spicy and warm, think cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger – these evoke images of baking and create a feeling of comfort. Earthy and woodsy scents featuring sandalwood, cedarwood and patchouli ground the space and bring the outdoors in, while scents like vanilla, caramel, and maple syrup add a touch of indulgence.

Another way of adding scent to your space is through fresh foliage and flowers. Often set aside for spring and summer months, there’s also a place for flowers in autumn too. We took inspiration from our Morris & Co. Standen serving bowl with its trailing leaves to create a centrepiece to complement the green hues already incorporated into our autumnal decor.

Fluffy green hydrangeas are perfect for creating a unique display using a large bowl or vase with a wide opening. Simply trim down three stems and arrange them within the bowl, filling the gaps between with the deep green leaves. Style the display on your sideboard, shelf or ottoman for natural fragrance that also adds visual appeal.
