A Twist on Tradition: Alternative Christmas Hosting Ideas

Here at Spode, we have quite the soft spot for a tradition - with 250 years of heritage behind us, it’s hard not to be. But we’re also a fan of mixing things up and adding our own unique touch. Whether that’s adding a modern twist to our archive designs, mixing and matching colour and pattern on a tablescape, or just generally doing things a little differently. So, with this in mind and Christmas just around the corner, we’ve pulled together our favourite alternative ideas for festive hosting to add a twist to the ultimate season of tradition. If you’re looking to switch things up this year, take a peek for some inspiration.

Festive Afternoon Tea

We all know there is no better occasion than afternoon tea. Often reserved for the spring and summer months, it means there are many months in the year that we miss out on our scone fix. However, we think afternoon tea should be enjoyed all year round, so what better way to celebrate the festive season than with tea, cake and an extra sprinkle of sparkle?

Perfect for celebrating with friends or as an alternative to your work Christmas party, pile your cake stand high with turkey and cranberry sandwiches, mince pies, macarons and fruit cake. Washed down with perfectly brewed tea or maybe a glass of something bubbly, there’s no better way to get together.

Festive Afternoon Tea Must-Haves

Cocktail Evening

There’s nothing new about enjoying a cocktail or two throughout the festive period, but for a Spode twist, why not add a little drama to your cocktail evening with surprise touches? Our favourites include a classic champagne cocktail with angostura bitters and cognac topped with a spun sugar garnish, a negroni with a festive twist of cinnamon, star anise and bay leaves, and a winter sangria. Served in festive-inspired glassware, with bowls of nibbles on the side, Michael Bublé serenading in the background and the twinkle of fairy lights. How festive.

Cheese and Wine Night

December can be such a busy month, and finding the time to shop, cook, and prepare a fancy three-course meal for friends and family can be tricky. So as an alternative, why not host a stress-free cheese and wine evening? With minimal cooking involved, gather a selection of delicious cheeses, dips and meats for the ultimate charcuterie board. Arrange on your favourite platters alongside serving bowls piled high with nuts, veg sticks for dipping, and crackers.
