Spode has always been a name steeped in history. Founded in 1770 in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent, we’ve spent more than two and a half centuries perfecting our craft, from our iconic blue and white patterns to the unmistakable quality of our ceramics. As part of our continued evolution, we’re proud to unveil a refreshed Spode logo and a brand-new backstamp.
The Spode logo
Our new logo is more than just a design update; it’s a homage to our roots. At its centre is the silhouette of the original Spode factory gates, located only 500 metres from our factory now and a familiar sight to anyone who knows our Stoke-on-Trent home. It’s a quiet but powerful nod to where our story began and to the generations of skilled potters and designers who have shaped our brand through the years.
We’ve also brought key details to the forefront, including ‘Est. 1770’ to underline our remarkable legacy, and ‘England’ to proudly affirm our status as a quintessentially British brand.

What is a backstamp?
A backstamp is the mark printed or stamped on the underside of a ceramic piece, a signature of authenticity, origin, and craftsmanship. For collectors, it’s a trusted way to identify the maker and date a piece. For heritage brands like Spode, the backstamp is also a reflection of identity and pride.
Here at Spode, we have used backstamps since the early 19th century, and over the years they have evolved in style and content, from simple printed marks to more decorative stamps showcasing royal warrants or specific ranges. These little emblems tell a story of time, place, and quality. With our new backstamp, the story continues – now updated for a new chapter, while keeping our heritage at its heart.

The new Spode backstamp
From summer 2025, you’ll begin to see our updated backstamp appear on UK-made pieces. Alongside the new logo, it features the words ‘Made in Stoke-on-Trent’, a celebration of our continued commitment to British manufacturing.
This backstamp is a reminder of where our ceramics are made, and by whom - the skilled craftspeople in our Potteries factory. It symbolises our ongoing investment in local production and ensures the legacy of British ceramic-making remains strong.
For collectors and long-time admirers of Spode, the new backstamp represents a special moment in our history. It captures the spirit of the brand: looking forward with confidence, while never losing sight of the past.
Whether you're adding to a well-loved collection or discovering Spode for the first time, each piece, and its mark on the back, tells a story over 250 years in the making.
