John Lewis X Spode: Zoological Gardens
An exclusive collaboration, marking 250 years of craftsmanship. Discover Zoological Gardens.
With 250 years’ of patterns in the Spode archive, there’s certainly a lot of inspiration to be found. So, when it came to creating our exclusive collection with John Lewis, we took inspiration from not one, but three archive designs.
We wanted to create an extraordinary new collection to celebrate Spode's 250th anniversary in style. And Zoological Garden’s modern melding of heritage designs does just that. Spectacularly.
Exploring the Spode Museum and our studio in Stoke-on-Trent led us to three archive designs we couldn’t resist combining: Zoological, Aesop’s Fable and Sporting Scenes.
First introduced in the 19th century, the Zoological design depicted many exotic animals who at the time were not very well known and often regarded as curiosities. Animals such as lions and zebras. As well as wildlife, Spode also turned to literary and cultural patterns. Aesop’s Fable, a design from the 1830’s, showcases designs using literacy themes and subjects in performing arts. And, produced in the 1810’s, Sporting Scenes includes images of exotic, faraway places. Designs created to stimulate the British public.
Together, the three fascinating designs showcase years of craftsmanship, reimagined in irresistible shades of pink, turquoise and monochrome.
Life’s all about mix and match and Zoological Gardens urges you to do just that. Animal print dinner plates for your table? Why not. A cupboard full of green and pink pottery? Oh, if you insist.
Every element of the Zoological Gardens collection has been designed and made in England. Crafted from the finest earthenware at Spode’s factory in the heart of The Potteries, Stoke-on-Trent.
Steal the show with the pink tea-for-one. A magnificent gift your friend will adore. Or host the most fabulous Spode afternoon tea setting at home with the collection’s gorgeous three-tier cake stand and teacups and saucers. And don’t forget the monochrome teapot, crafted for the perfect pour. You can expect nothing less from Spode.
