Arundel is a Spode pattern which has been revived several times. The
earliest pattern number is 609 dating from 1805 with the pattern of gold
leaves was hand gilded onto a white background. The cobalt blue version
has number 1242 introduced in 1809. There are other versions around this
time with numbers 888, 908, 909, 1074, 1075, 1076, 1200, 1204 and 2136.
It is unlikely that the pattern was known by the name during this period.
In the 1930s the pattern was revived as teaware and named Arundel. The
gold decoration was now printed onto different coloured backgrounds. Several
versions were available in different colours on Hamilton shape. Pattern
number Y4598 (c1936) in maroon, Y4400 (c1935) in green and Y4403 (c1935)in
Powder Blue.
In the Spode period the style of gold leaves on a cobalt blue ground
was also used in conjunction with panels of sprays of flowers and in 1998
a new pattern was produced using this design as its inspiration. The 1998
Arundel pattern 10" dinner plate is a direct copy of Spode's 2136
design. The border design of the other pieces in the service derive from
Spode's pattern 1709.
