Spode and Copeland are perhaps not particularly well known for the manufacture of Toby Jugs. However Toby Jugs manufactured here are known from the early Spode period (pre 1833) and the Copeland & Garrett period (1833-1847) but most seem to date from about 1906 to 1940.
The Toby Jugs are recorded randomly in the pattern books sometimes in amongst the tableware patterns, sometimes in the shape books and even amongst the Toilet Ware patterns. Following the Spode tradition of underglaze transfer printing many often have transfer printed hats and coats with handpainted colouring added over the glaze.
Below is a table showing the pattern numbers, name, date and brief description of the Toby Jugs discovered in the archive so far (August 2000). With over 75000 patterns listed, and thousands of shapes, more may be discovered as the archive continues to be researched. As well as the above the Toby Jugs were also produced in plain colours. These included green Royal Jade from about 1932 - 1938 and the matt cream Velamour produced in the 1930s (Velamour was produced again in the 1950s but it is not sure if the Toby Jug was manufactured.)
