Oval shape was introduced in 1976 as a new sha pe for Spode but based on a shape from the early 1800s known as Old Oval shape. (Old Oval shape was gradually superseded by New Oval shape but both date from the early 1800s so this 1970s oval shape is referred to here as modern). A very small range of patterns was produced and the flatware i.e plates, saucers and platters followed the existing Regimental shape. It was the hollowware, ie teapots, coffee pots and tureens which was newly designed. The main patterns produced were:
The range was discontinued in about 1981 with matchings being made until the mid-1980s. Country Lane and Baroda were also produced in giftware ranges including bowls, boxes vases and trinket trays.
