Registered number 159997

Introduced: 1890

The Chelsea Wicker shape was registered as a design with the number 159997 at the British Patent Office on October 29th 1890. It is of an ivory coloured earthenware and was generally marked 'Spode Imperial'. The Spode Imperial name and mark was registered as a trademark with number 90067 on 11th April 1890.

The deeply fluted rim derives from the famous Chelsea factory in London. The embossed wicker weave is a feature which Josiah Spode (and others) used as early as 1808 or even earlier, on earthenware, perhaps 1796.

Although registered in 1890 the earliest pattern is recorded in 1892 as 2/3674 and the shape was described 'Basket Work Chelsea Shape'. Many patterns were produced including 'HB' border which was revived in the 1920s for the USA market and renamed Wicker Dale. Some of the most famous patterns are Buttercup, Cowslip, Wicker Dale, and Wicker Lane.
