Chelsea/Derby Figures

Figures of this type have been made over a long period. They were originally produced in the middle of the 18th century in Chelsea. When this company was in difficulties it was purchased by William Duesbury of Derby and figures made at the end of the 18th century were known as Chelsea-Derby. In the middle of the 19th century the Derby factory was itself in difficulties and closed. Many of the moulds were transported by canal to Staffordshire and purchased by Spode.

Figures from the moulds have been made at various times throughout this company's history. The moulds may have been used for Parian figures in the 19th century. Different series of figures were produced in the 20th century often marketed as 'Reproductions of Authentic Chelsea Figures'. The 1933 series comprised 34 figures whilst in the 1970s a smaller range was offered.

The figures are no longer in production.
