| Buffalo was one of Spode's earliest blue printed designs probably first produced as matchings for Chinese porcelain originals . Examples survive dating from the 1780s, Spode being amongst the first English manufacturers to use it. At least five versions were produced by Spode; this version has an elaborate brocade border. The design depicts a typically Chinese scene with buffalo and rider in front of a pavilion. The rider is thought to represent Lao‑Tzu, known as the Venerable Philosopher who taught compassion and humility. |
