There was more than one edition of Celtic Presentation Plates. The first series was issued a plate at a time and then in 1979 a range of seven was made available. The plates do not seem to have been a limited edition. The designs are strongly influenced by Celtic design. The Celtic school of manuscript illuminators based much of their style on the textile art of weaving and plaiting. More intricate designs owe their inspiration to the art of the metalworker. Iona is the most famous settlement of the early Celtic Church . St. Columba established a monastery there in AD563. Iona was the first plate in the series.

Each design has its own pattern number. A series was also produced on an 8" Coupe plate. The Coupe shape series have the pattern numbers Y8455 - Y8461 for the series. The pattern numbers for the other plates are:
