Mayflower was first introduced in about 1929 with pattern number 2/8772. It is printed in a mauve colour known as ‘unique’ and handcoloured. It was produced on Gadroon shape. A later version was produced in about 1958 printed in grey only which has the pattern number S3275, this version was discontinued in July 1969.
The design dates back to 1831 when it was known as British Flowers. This was one of several floral designs introduced in the early 1800s, many of which are still in production today. There are other versions too: pattern number 4749 was decorated onglaze and, on Charlotte shape, the pattern was known as Bouquet.
British Flowers is now produced on a 10” blue printed plate and a jumbo cup and saucer as part of Spode’s Blue Room collection. The jumbo cup and saucer is also produced in cranberry. Mayflower is no longer in production.
Another pattern was produced in 1984 which was a range of giftware which was given the name Bouquet. The pieces had numbers in the F series for Fancies. The pattern was completely different from the Bouquet previously made and was a combination of flowers and birds. |
