Bertha pattern has registered number 226431 which registered the design with the British Patent Office on 31st January 1894.

The name is listed as Bertha or Ship. The name Ship was used as the pattern uses the border design from a pattern known as Ship which originally was a copy of a ship scene from 18th century Chinese Porcelain. The border pattern became very popular and was used in many ways and in different colours with different centre designs. Although, subsequently, ships were rarely used as part of the design the name Ship stuck and it may be that Bertha was an attempt to move away from this.

The pattern was printed and then handpainted and different versions were produced with their own unique pattern number. One which is usually seen is 2/3982 which was first recorded in about 1894.
